Citizen Journalism

Mr.Owais Mangalwala, producer of renowned programs like “State of Sharia” and “Wired and Active” on Dawn News Channel attended a seminar on "Citizen Journalism" on Jan 29,2011 at Jinnah University For Women. At the beginning of his lecture he shared his student's life moments with JUW girls. Apart from that he told us that "Formalizing to eye witness is actually a Citizen Journalism" and a good citizen journalist always shares his/her experience with the audience of the world.

He enlightened the four types of Journalism:
  •       Sharing of experience.
  •       Sharing of opinion.
  •       Sharing of discovery.
  •       Sharing of expertise.
He said that "the more a citizen journalist have knowledge the more he will get success."

He further add that a Citizen Journalist should highlight:
  • Those things which media is not covering.
  • He should'nt only promote negative things but also try to promote positive things happening in our society.
  • If media is doing something wrong then he should do something to make them realize.

Following are the key points of Citizen Journalism illustrated by Mr.Owais Mangalwala:
  •     The necessity must be real.
  •     Write your own point of view.
  •     Remember that everything and anything can be reported.
  •     Never depreciate yourself.
  •     Be descriptive but never exaggerate.
  •     Accuracy is the key so you have to be dead accurate.
  •     Work on writing style and selection of words.
  •     Follow a code of conduct.
  •     Keep your eyes open (Its about how far you can see).
  •     Find a mentor.
  •     Avoid plagiarism.
  •     Meet experienced people related to your work.

In the end of his lecture he suggested Mass Communicators to promote yourself through blogs.

Miss Humera, lecturer of Jinnah University concluded the lecture on Citizen Journalism and asked him to come again. She also congratulated him for starting his upcoming show "CITIZEN JOURNALISM" on Dawn News.
